How to Water and Fertilize Your Fig Tree
S & J Nursery’s guide to nurturing your Gardens Harvest of
the Common Fig for the Northeast Florida Landscape.
How to Water and Fertilize Your Fig Tree:
Having a pretty ornamental tree when you plant a fig is just a given. But for those of you who would like that beautiful fig tree to produce lots and lots of great tasting treats, making sure your tree gets the water and nutrients that it needs to produce that prized crop of fresh figs is the key. Here are some basic guides to help you get your edible landscape fig tree producing!
*Water Requirements of the Common Fig Tree in the North Florida Landscape:
Fig Trees grown from a container will require a minimum of one year of special attention to watering when planted into the Northeast Florida landscape. UFIFAS recommends a minimum of 10 gallons applied 3 times each week during the establishment year.
They will survive on their own with our frequent rains after established into the landscape but can require a total of 20-50 gallons applied once per week during times of prolonged drought for mature trees according to UFIFAS.
We recommend daily watering for the first 1-3 weeks after planting from your S & J Nursery container and then going to the 3 times a week recommended by UFIFAS. Remember to take local rainfall into consideration and that these recommendations are for times when no rain has watered the trees for you.
*Fertilizer Requirements for the Common Fig Tree in the Northeast Florida landscape:
Here at S & J Nursery in the container we fertilize in early spring, early summer and again in late summer or early fall with a special mix of Osmocote Plus / Milorganite and what we call Blue Chip that is basically a water soluble plant fertilizer ( like Miracle Grow) to give it an extra boost until the Osmocote has activated and released into the soil.
Be sure not to fertilize after September in Northeast Florida , Jacksonville and St. Augustine area so that you don’t cause a flush of new growth that can be cold sensitive and may freeze.
I recommend a generous helping of organic material ( Compost, cow manure, leaf mold etc. ) spread out under the canopy of the tree each spring to help the tree fight off any nematode populations that may be present and to give it the nutrients it needs to produce those beautiful leaves and delicious fruit! Follow the spring compost application with at least 2 cups of a low nitrogen fertilizer like 10-10-10 or even 6-6-6 in spring, again in early summer, and again in early fall or late summer.
