Growing Tips and Challenges for the Common Fig Tree
S & J Nursery’s Guide to Getting and Keeping Your Fig Tree Growing Healthy
*Growing Tips for Common Figs in Northeast Florida:
Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers as they will lead to leafy green beauty and not so many fruit when planting figs as an edible landscape tree. See How to Water and Fertilize Your Fig Tree for detailed fertilizing information.
Be sure not to fertilize or prune after September in Northeast Florida , Jacksonville and St. Augustine area so that you don’t cause a flush of new growth that can be cold sensitive and may freeze, particularly on younger less established trees.
Remember to water well after planting and don’t forgot to water during prolonged droughts on mature trees. Fruit production will decline on a tree that is drought stressed, so don’t forget to watch local rainfall levels.
Plant your fruit trees slightly above grade by an inch or two so that as the tree settles down lower after planting in our sandy soils and heavy rains before it gets rooted into the surrounding soil, it will be level, not lower than the original grade of the soil once it has rooted in.
*Challenges for Common Figs in Northeast Florida:
Nematodes can be problematic in sandy soils. Amend with compost when planting and add a generous helping of compost each spring, or plant near a building where roots can be sheltered under it’s foundation.
Frost damage can occur with new growth or on trees that are not fully dormant at the time when freezing temperatures arrive. Prune out damaged foliage in early spring
Fungus called fig rust can affect leaves causing them to have a brown rusty all over color on the leaf. Treat with copper sulfate. Remove damaged and fallen leaves each fall and discard fallen leaves to help prevent fig rust.
Prune trees to open up the center removing branches going inward and keeping outward branches in order to keep maximum air flow to the trees foliage.
Remember figs don’t like wet feet, it breeds fungal problems in fig trees. Plant in a well drained location or elevate into a burm, or plant in a pot if you have consistently wet soils during the rain season.
