Sod vs Seed… The Great Debate
If your anything like me youve tried seed and failed. With Florida’s high rainfall rate seeding can be a difficult and dirty process. I cant tell you how many times I watched my seeds I had put out wash away the first time we got a heavy rain, or how much mud got tracked into the living room floor by my three sons. It was like Christmas when my husband finally gave in and brought home the two pallets of sod.
Time is the biggest advantage to the sod vs. seed battle and cost is the biggest disadvantage. However there are a few more minor things to consider, seed may be blown about by the wind, eaten by birds, or fail because of drought if they don’t get tracked off by your family pet first. In addition, it takes some weeks to form a visually appealing lawn and further time before it is robust enough for use.
Erosion after seeding may be a concern in some areas particularly areas of high rain fall or sloped landscapes near water. Sod reduces erosion by quickly stabalizing the soil in these types of areas.
Turf (sod) avoids these problems, and with proper care, newly laid sod is usually fully functional within 30 days of installatin and its root system is comparable to that of a seeding lawn two to three years older!
However, that being said, consider that turf requires considerably more water for its establishment, remember when sodding that those roots are doing in a matter of weeks what seeds take years to do and water accordingly.
