New Guinea Impatiens 

in the Northeast Florida Landscape

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens  Origins:

– New Guinea Impaten Hybrids have been developed from species native to New Guinea.

– Most often planted as an annual in most regions of the USA, here in North Florida / Jacksonville / St. Augustine area it most often will not make  through our winter seasons. Expect to replant yearly.

– Planted as an annual New Guinea Impatiens add touches of big bold color to any landscape setting from spring to fall.

– “Harmony” series Hybrids are an excellent heat tolerant Selection for the North Florida garden.

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens Preferred Exposure:

– New Guinea Impaten Hybrids will need a partial sun and partial shade
exposure or may be planted in full shade locations in the North Florida | Jacksonville | St. Augustine area gardens landscape.

 – Can be planted in full sun locations with ample irrigation provided.

 

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens Foliage:

-Big bold thick foliage is often seen with variegated striping along the edge or center of the leaves, some may have purple undersides to the leaves and a green top, or be just altogether green.

– Although a little farther South in Florida these plants are a reliable Perennial, most selections will frost damage or completely die out in our winter months.  Best results when planted as an annual and replaced with cool season annuals in late fall.

 

 

 

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens Soil Preference / Salt tolerance:

– New guinea impatiens should be planted into moist but well draining soils.
Ammend your planting area with compost when planting and these plants will appreciate the TLC and reward you with non stop blooms from spring through fall.

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens Size Variance:

– New Guinea Impaten Hybrids will grow between 12-18 inches high and wide.

– Ideal for lower growing and front of the border plantings or even mixed flowering containers. Bold color looks great when scattered throughout mixed perennial borders or flower beds.

 

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens Growth Habit:

– Mounding foliage.

 

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens Growth Rate:

– Fast growing.

 

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens  Mix Blooms:

– New Guinea Impaten Hybrids are available in a wide array of leaf and flower colors with al shades imaginable of blooms in colors of white, pink, purple and red, even swirled colored flowers. Really very showy blooms.

 

Hybrid New Guinea Impatens  Water Requirements:

– New Guinea impatiens are very forgiving plants, when the soil does not
have adequate moisture the leaves hang out of alignment with the sun, but once you give them a good soaking the foliage will pop back up within just 20-30 minutes and look great again. I like to use them as soil moisture
indicators around newly planted trees or in large garden beds, when the New Guinea Impatien has wilted its time to water again!

– Regular irrigation required especially in locations where planted in afternoon sun in well draining soils.

 

Butterfly or Bird Attracting:

– S & J Nursery’s New Guinea Impatien Hybrids are not touted as butterfly and bird attracting bird  for the landscape.

– Easy maintenance blooming plant for flower beds and landscape borders.

– Great selection for a mixed container planting.

– Plant in masses for a blooms display that cant be missed!

– New Guinea Impaten Hybrids makes a great companion plant for other perennials in the garden.

 

 

Care of Hybrid New Guinea Impatens  in the North Florida | Jacksonville | St.
Augustine area landscape:

– Water every day during the establishment period after planting in the garden from a nursery container, once plants have established themselves into the landscape, you can begin to taper watering back but plants will most often need water 3-4 times per week in well draining soils. 

– Fertilize each spring, summer and fall with a handful of garden compost or a mixture of Milorganite and a slow release poly coated plant food such as Osmocote or Stay Green general purpose plant food or 10-10-10.
