Ornamental Grasses | Grass like Plants in
the Northeast Florida | Jacksonville
| St. Augustine area Landscape
Its no secret that Ornamental grasses are spreading like wildfire among our North Florida landscapes. You can hardly take a drive down the block without noticing a swath of some grass like plant or another planted along
the roadside, golf course, commercial building, home foundation plantings, public highway, ball field and well…just about every other place we can think of to put them.
With so many varieties available that fit easily into every possible landscape area from a pond side planting to the dry sandy hills along the ocean side, Ornamental Grasses are everywhere.
They are the prefect low maintenance landscape solution to our busy life schedules. Why would we not plant something that is going to look great without much help from us? Spend more time in the pool instead of tending the garden around it with grasses and grass like plants, you’ll be glad you did!
Ornamental Grasses? What Exactly Does that Mean Anyway?
For those of you new to North Florida gardening or that are just like me and are often confused by plant classifications that don’t seem to make any botanical sense, this one is for you…
Ornamental grasses is a term used to describe both actual grasses and grass – like plants that we have selected over time and deemed worthy of propagation for domestic use.
They include many plant species from sedges to rush and even plants just generally referred to by gardeners as grassy, like Iris or day lilies.
So while not all ornamental grasses sold at S & J Nursery, in fact hardly any of the plants grouped into grasses and grass like plant categories are actually part of the grass family, their general appearance lends us
towards clumping them all together into one big happy family of upright strappy foliage plants that we like to use to decorate our homes and gardens.
