Double Red / Rosa Radtko

Knockout Rose Origins:Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko

- The Knockout is a carefully bred rose that was a result of crossing old heirloom roses with more modern roses on a quest for a care free rose for all of us modern gardeners with little time and no knowledge of what roses need and how to take care of them....and that is exactly what William Radler got when he bred the Knockout line of roses. Thanks to his painstaking efforts you don't have to be an expert rosarian to have a beautiful and healthy Knockout Rose bush in your front yard landscape. You don't even have to be much of a gardener at all! Its the rose for the rest of us...so we can look like we know what we are doing without actually having to know what we are doing. Its my kind of rose... Try it you wont believe how well they thrive and how little effort it takesto keep them looking great!

Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko Preferred Exposure:

- Full sun, although I will have to say that here in our North Florida gardens the knockouts are performing extremely well in lower light situations needing only 6 hours a day, leaving us open to full sun, morning sun with afternoon shade and afternoon sun with morning shade planting locations. I even have a few doing really well for their third year now in filtered light under taller Oak and Pine trees. So go ahead and try it where you want it, you may be surprised at how well it does for you.

Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko Soil Preference / Salt tolerance:

- Plant Knockout roses in North Florida in just about any well draining soil. Add a healthy shovel full of compost or cow manure to the planting hole when you dig and you'll love the extra help it gives you as you establish the rose in your gardens landscape.

Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko Size Variance:

- Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko will quickly reach 3-4 ft high and 2-3 ft wide in the North Florida | Jacksonville | St. Augustine garden area. Within the second growth season you can expect this rose to have reached its mature height and width so give them plenty of room to spread when planting.

Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko Growth Habit:

- Rounded shrub rose not quite as wide as it is high in the North Florida \ Jacksonville| St. Augustine area landscape.

Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko Growth Rate:

- Extremely quick to establish itself in the landscape and reaches mature size within 2 growing seasons.

Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko Bloom:

- There's a reason they call these the Knockout Rose, they will bloom and bloom and bloom. Its like the energizer bunny rose. What I love about the knockout is you don't have to get out there with your landscape shears and trim off the old blossoms in order to get this rose to rebloom after setting its buds and flowering. In fact you can do absolutely nothing and this rose gets right to it forming new buds and reblooming within just a matter of weeks! don't get me wrong they respond just as well to a dose of rose food and a trim as any fussy hybrid tea rose will, but it just doesn't have to be done, you can do nothing but a once a year trim in the spring and still have a great blooming rose all spring summer and fall!

 - Four layers of  dark cherry red petals make the double red knockout rose a stand out among roses, returning the look of the rose to the more familiar Hybrid tea rose without getting any of the maintenance issues to go along with it.

Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko Water Requirements:

- Water daily to establish into the landscape and use supplimental irrigation twice a week after that for best results in the landscape when not receiving regular rainfall.

Best Uses For Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko:

- Excellent when planted as a single specimen in a perennial border or when planted in masses for maximum landscape curb appeal. Kncokout roses also make great container plants, try a knockout rose tree form for planters at the entryway of your home or next to the back porch or patio for an easy care long blooming accent.

Care of Knockout Rose Double Red / Rosa Radtko:

- knockout roses can certainly be treated like a fussy hybrid tea rose, being trimmed every time the blooms cycle is complete and fertilizing every two weeks with rose food. If your a rose gardener and used to a schedule, stick with it. Your knockouts will undoubtedly be the envy of the neighborhood. For the rest of us... here's a few easy tips to keep your knockouts looking good....

- Water every day during the establishment period. See watering your newly planted items for more information.

- They will need good water during the establishment period and bi-weekly supplimental irrigation particularly in periods of low rainfall.

- Pruning may be done seasonally as needed for maximum curb appeal. But the Knockout roses are considered to be a landscape shrub rose and can be easily maintained by pruning the plant down to 12-14 inches each spring. I have found in my North Florida sandy soil garden that I prefer to trim mine back to 14 inches each spring and give them a nice shovel full of compost and rose food, followed a few months later with a mid summer light pruning just to tidy them up a bit (while I am dong other summer pruning on my perennials) and another dose of rose food mixed with milorganite for the summer months helps keep those blooms popping quickly and the foliage nice and green.

- Add compost or cow manure yearly as a surface treatment pulling back the mulch and spreading it around under the foliage of the plant on top of the existing soil. don't forget to remulch around the plants to help them stay cool and help them to retain moisture in our hot sunny North Florida gardens.

- Plants respond well to a mixture of rose food and Milorganite each spring and again in mid summer, sprinkling the fertilizer around the mulch circle underneath the foliage of the plant.
